Leon Scott Kennedy is a video game character from the Resident Evil survival horror series. He is one of the two main characters in Resident Evil 2 and the protagonist of Resident Evil 4. During the events of Resident Evil 2, Leon is a rookie police officer who arrives in Raccoon City for his first day on the job, only to confront the T-Virus outbreak first-hand. He survives the events of Resident Evil 2 and six years later in Resident Evil 4, Leon returns as a secret agent for the U.S. government, assigned to protect the President's family.

Leon is one of the two leading characters featured in Resident Evil 2; the other being Claire Redfield. In the story, Leon is a recently-hired police officer for the Raccoon Police Department. He arrives late to Raccoon City on his first day of duty. He finds the town already overrun by zombies and encounters a civilian, Claire. The two decide to seek refuge in the city's police station, and they attempt to escape the city alive. He maintains radio contact with Claire and is partnered with Ada Wong, a woman claiming to be looking for her missing fiancee. His attempt to find an escape route leads him to Umbrella's underground laboratory within the city, where he confronts several of Umbrella's mutant creatures, including a mutated William Birkin. Just prior to making his escape, Leon learns that Ada is actually a corporate spy sent to steal the G-Virus. However, Ada is seriously wounded and presumed dead falling from a rail in the lab, leaving Leon to escape along with Claire and Sherry Birkin.

The epilogues of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis expand on Leon's fate following Resident Evil 2. After escaping the city, Claire set out on her own to search for her brother, while Leon and Sherry were approached by the U.S. military, and Leon made an undisclosed deal with a representative of the U.S. Government. In Resident Evil: Survivor and Resident Evil Code: Veronica Leon has joined an anti-Umbrella force. In Survivor, he is mentioned to be the one who sent the game's protagonist, Ark Thompson, to Sheena Island (the game's setting). In Code: Veronica, Claire gets in touch with Leon when she is trapped on Rockfort Island, and Leon relays the information to Chris Redfield.

Leon's next game appearance depicts him as an anti-Umbrella agent in the non-canonical Resident Evil Gaiden for the Game Boy Color. In Gaiden Leon goes missing during a mission aboard the Umbrella cruiser Starlight. Barry Burton meets up with Leon and the two team up along with an orphaned girl named Lucia to destroy a new type of Bio-Organic Weapon that can alter its appearance to look and act like an ordinary human, the only giveaway being its green blood. The game's ending shows a close-up of Leon's neck bleeding green blood that goes unnoticed by the other characters, indicating that he was infected by the virus before Barry came to rescue him. This cliffhanger was left unresolved in Leon's next appearance.

Leon returned as the protagonist of Resident Evil 4. Set six years after the events of Resident Evil 2, Leon has moved up in the rankings and has become an agent for the U.S government and is assigned to rescue the newly-elected President's daughter, Ashley Graham, who is being held in an undisclosed location. Her kidnappers turn out to be part of a cult known as Los Illuminados, which has taken control of the local villagers with a breed of parasites known as Las Plagas. Leon teams up once again with Ada Wong, who seeks to steal the Plagas sample for her unknown employer, as well as with a Spaniard named Luis Sera, a former researcher for Osmund Saddler, the cult leader. He also confronts Jack Krauser, a former acquaintance who disappeared two years prior to the events of the game.

Claire Redfield is a leading video game character appearing in the Resident Evil series of survival horror games. A nineteen year old college student and motorcyclist, she is the younger sister of S.T.A.R.S. member Chris Redfield, the protagonist of the first game. She is one of the main characters in Resident Evil 2 and the protagonist of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, which follows her search for her missing brother. She was voiced by Canadian actress Alyson Court.

History
Claire in Resident Evil 2.
Claire in Resident Evil 2.

During the initial development of Resident Evil 2, a character named Elza Walker was to be the female lead accompanying Leon S. Kennedy. When Capcom decided to scrap an 80% completed build of the game (later dubbed Resident Evil 1.5) and restart development, the female lead was redesigned and became Claire Redfield. Like Elza, Claire was also a college student and motorcyclist, with the main difference being that Claire is the younger sister of Chris Redfield, whereas Elza had no relationship with any established character. To heighten the resemblance between the siblings, Claire was given auburn hair instead of blonde, blue eyes and an outfit that resembles Chris' S.T.A.R.S. uniform (including the presence of a knife sheath).[citation needed]

Resident Evil 2 revolves around Claire's search for her missing brother. She arrives in Raccoon City to find the town being overrun by zombies. She seeks refuge in the city's police station, and learns that Chris has already left for Europe in order to investigate the activities of the Umbrella Corporation, the company responsible for the viral outbreak in the city. The rest of the game focuses on Claire's attempt to escape from the city alive. She maintains radio contact with Leon and teams up with a young girl named Sherry, while fighting against the various creatures infesting the precinct, including a mutated William Birkin. Claire eventually found a secret passage that leads her from the precinct into a sewer that takes her into Umbrella's underground lab. In the aftermath of the game, Claire escapes from the lab along with Leon and Sherry and eventually the three of them manage to destroy the mutated Birkin. As revealed in the epilogue of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Claire left the city by herself in order to continue her search for Chris, while Leon and Sherry were retrieved by the U.S. Military.

In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Claire is the player's character for the first portion of the game. After an unsuccessful infiltration of Umbrella's medical branch in Paris, Claire finds herself imprisoned on Rockfort Island. She escapes and teams up with fellow prisoner Steve Burnside following another viral outbreak, this time caused by a rival corporation of Umbrella's. The pair escape from the island, only to find themselves in another of Umbrella's secret labs, this time in Antarctica, before they are taken captive by Alexia Ashford. The second half of the game follows Chris trying to save his captured sister from Umbrella. He finds his way into the Antarctic lab and rescues a captive Claire before the final battle with Alexia. The siblings escape from the facility via jet during the game's ending and they vow to put an end to the Umbrella Corporation's activities.

In other media

Adrienne Frantz portrayed Claire in two television commercials, directed by George Romero, that aired in Japan to promote the release of Resident Evil 2.

Ali Larter portrays Claire Redfield in the film Resident Evil: Extinction. The character of Claire did not exist in the early draft scripts for the film and previously Jill Valentine (who appeared in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, played by Sienna Guillory) would continue the role in Extinction. Later producers Paul W.S. Anderson and Jeremy Bolt decided to have a separate game character appear along side the previous film's lead Alice (Milla Jovovich), saying, "We thought, rather than bring Jill back, put her with another game heroine."[1]

The film version of Claire shows her leading a convoy of survivors, along side Carlos Oliveira, after the T-virus has overtaken most of the world's people. Claire leads the survivors across the Nevada desert to Las Vegas and then on to sanctuary in Alaska.[2] At the end of the film, she and the remaining members of the convoy depart in an Umbrella helicopter towards Alaska.

Sherry Birkin (voiced by Lisa Yamanaka) is a 12 year old girl who serves as Claire's partner in the game. She is the daughter of G-Virus creator William Birkin and was instructed by her mother to seek refuge in the police station during the zombie outbreak. She spends time on the run from the zombies until she meets Claire. The dangers Sherry faces change depending on the order in which Claire's half of the game is played. In the "Claire A" scenario, she is implanted with a G-Virus embryo by G, the creature that was once her father, and Claire must prepare a G-Virus vaccine before Sherry undergoes mutation. In the "Claire B" scenario, Sherry is chased by the Tyrant sent by Umbrella to retrieve the G-Virus hidden inside her locket.

In the character-specific epilogues featured in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis it is revealed that she was picked up by the military after escaping the city with Leon and Claire, and was then taken into custody by the U.S. government. However, in the fictional documentary Wesker's Report, Wesker states that Sherry is "safe in our hands".

William Birkin is a fictional character in the Resident Evil series. He is a top virologist working for the Umbrella Corporation and is responsible for the discovery of the G-Virus and development of the G-Virus project. He is also the husband of Annette Birkin and the father of Sherry Birkin. His involvement in the G-Virus project serves as a catalyst for the events of Resident Evil 2. He also has a supporting role in the prequel, Resident Evil 0, where he is involved in the events of the game from behind the scenes. His voice was provided by Diego Matamoros in Resident Evil 2 and by an unattributed actor in Resident Evil 0.

Background

Birkin joined the Umbrella Corporation in 1977 at the young age of 15. He was placed at the Umbrella Management Training Facility under James Marcus. There, he became a close acquaintance and rival of fellow researcher Albert Wesker, as they were both considered to be Marcus' top apprentices. They were involved in the development of the T-Virus project, until the facility was closed down in 1978.

Afterwards, he and Wesker were transferred to the Arklay Research Facility on July 31, 1978, where they continued their T-Virus research and were made chief researchers of the facility. Birkin was proud of being the youngest researcher ever to work for Umbrella, until the arrival of Alexia Ashford, who was assigned to be chief researcher of Umbrella's Antarctic facility at the age of 10 in 1981. Although she worked in a different facility, Birkin became jealous of her, especially due to all the praise she was receiving from his co-workers. He became completely focused on his work and research, until the announcement of Alexia's death in 1983. Despite his rivarly with Alexia, his research yielded no results until he created the Hunter Bio-Organic Weapon (B.O.W.) around the mid-1980s.

He was "promoted" in 1988 to lead the T-Virus project (and completed the development of the Tyrant) after he and Wesker assassinated their former mentor, Marcus. By this time, Birkin was already married to his assistant, Annette and the marriage had already produced a daughter named Sherry (born in 1986). When he and Wesker were conducting an experiment with the NE-a parasite (the prototype of the Nemesis project), they used a female specimen (Lisa Trevor) as a guinea pig. Lisa was the only test subject to fully accept the parasite. Noticing her strange survival rate, Birkin examined her body structure and discovered that the variation of the Progenitor Virus that was injected into her in 1967 had absorbed all the mutagenic organisms that she had been implanted with since then and mutated into a new virus, which Birkin named the G-Virus.

He received approval from Umbrella's president, Ozwell E. Spencer, to initiate the G-Virus Project. In 1993, Birkin and his wife were transferred to an Underground Research Facility established specifically for the project. Birkin also bribed the chief of the Raccoon Police Department, Brian Irons, to cover up the project, using his wife as the "middle man".

He completed his development of the G-Virus in September 1998 and planned on using his final research in order to be promoted into Umbrella's executive board. However, he began to disagree with his superiors and planned on keeping his research to himself and sell it to the U.S. Government. He requested to have the Military intervene and retrieve him. However, the team that was sent never came and the Umbrella Special Forces Unit Alpha Team (led by HUNK, under orders from Christine Henri and Spencer) came to steal his work. He was shot by the soldiers and left for dead. Refusing to have his work stolen, he injected himself with a sample of the G-Virus and turned into the mutated creature known as G.

The G-Transformation
This article or section describes a work or element of fiction in a primarily in-universe style.
Please rewrite this article to explain the fiction more clearly and provide non-fictional perspective.

After his mutation into G, Birkin went after the USFU team that stole his samples and chased them into the sewers. The team was taken by surprise at the sight of the mutated Birkin and were not prepared to handle the creature. During the ensuing onslaught, several vials containing the T-Virus broke out from the containers and were ingested by rats, which served as the cause of the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City. Of the USFU team that Birkin fought, only HUNK survived.

Several days later, on September 29, Birkin wandered around the RPD Precinct and encountered some of the surviving civilians, his daughter among them. Looking for a host to propagate his species, he implanted his embryos into a few victims (which varies, depending on the scenario the player is playing). However, only hosts with the same DNA structure were capable of accepting his embryos (in the "Claire A/Leon B" scenario of Resident Evil 2, he is successful in implanting an embryo into Sherry).

Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield encountered G during their escape from the RPD Precinct. He mutated into five different forms while fighting them. In his first form, Birkin retained most of his human appearance, with the most notable difference being his enlarged right arm (with an eye on its shoulder) and a deranged mind that relies entirely on instincts he holds a pipe that damages and temporarily stuns the main character. In his following mutation, he grew a new head (the old one forming part of his left chest) and grew claws from his right hand. By his third transformation, any semblance of a human being was completely gone, save his bipedal nature and only vaguely humanoid shape, with his rest of body having mutated along with his arm. In this form, he grew two additional arms, with his older arms forming part of his back, like wings. After sustaining enough damage from his battles with Leon and Claire, he transformed into his next form, in which he grew a new mouth from his chest and started walking on all fours this form this is thought to be the most agile of his forms. This form required G to constantly feed on other creatures, which resulted in his fifth and (as far as known) final mutation, in which he became a malleable lump of flesh with tentacles.

During all of these mutations, he chased after Leon and Claire from the sewers to the underground research facility and eventually, to an escape train, which Leon and Claire were riding. His presence in the train caused an Anti-Biohazard Detonating Mechanism to be activated. Leon, Claire and Sherry managed to stop the train and escape while G was inside. The train was destroyed, taking what was once William Birkin with it. Sometime after they left the site, Albert Wesker (now working for "The Organization") managed to salvage what was left of Birkin as a specimen.

Ada Wong is a recurring video game character appearing in the Resident Evil video game series. A mysterious American woman of Chinese descent, Ada is a cunning and formidable secret agent. She is voiced by actress Sally Cahill and has appeared in Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

History

Ada was first mentioned by name in a document entitled "Researcher's Letter", in the original Resident Evil. The letter, written by a dying researcher named John, is addressed to his girlfriend and co-worker Ada.

Resident Evil 2

Ada made her first appearance in Resident Evil 2, serving as the partner character to Leon S. Kennedy and as a playable character during certain sections. Under the guise of an ordinary citizen, she requests Leon's aid, claiming to be looking for her missing boyfriend John. She learns that John died during the "Mansion Incident" (Resident Evil) and attempts to escape the city with Leon. She develops romantic feelings for him, but it is later revealed that Ada is actually a spy for an unnamed organization, sent to retrieve the G-Virus sample. She does not escape with Leon and is presumed dead at the outcome of the game. Her on-screen death differs depending on the order in which Leon's half of the game is played. In the Leon A scenario, she confronts Leon before being shot by Annette Birkin and appears to fall to her death from a catwalk. In the Leon B scenario, she confronts the Tyrant, before being mortally wounded and dying. Despite her apparent death, she returns to help the player near the end of the second scenario by providing the rocket launcher needed to destroy the Tyrant. Ada is also a fully playable character in the "Extreme Battle" minigame added to later versions of the game.

A character-specific epilogue in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis confirms her survival and Wesker's Report, a fictional documentary published to promote the release of Resident Evil Code: Veronica X expands on Ada's role in Resident Evil 2. The organization Ada works for is revealed to be the same one that hired Albert Wesker in Code: Veronica X. Moreover, Wesker worked with Ada behind the scenes to retrieve the G-Virus and it was he who saved her life.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
Ada Wong, injured but alive in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.
Ada Wong, injured but alive in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

Ada's story was continued in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, where she was a playable character in the "Death's Door" scenario[1]. This story had never been portrayed in the series before, and covered Ada's mission to retrieve the G-Virus sample after having failed to obtain it in Resident Evil 2[2]. Although heavily injured during the events of Resident Evil 2, Ada managed to complete her objective, rendezvousing with Nicholai Ginovaef[3] at the Apple Inn (a location first portrayed in Resident Evil Outbreak) along the way. It was ultimately revealed that Ada escaped from Raccoon City by helicopter after a climactic confrontation with a heavily mutated Tyrant.

Resident Evil 4

Ada returned alongside Leon in Resident Evil 4. Taking place six years after the events of Resident Evil 2, the game reunites the two characters, as Ada assists Leon on his mission to rescue Ashley Graham. However, her true objective is to retrieve a sample of Las Plagas parasite from cult leader Osmund Saddler and she does fulfill this mission in the end. While not playable in the main game, Ada has the starring role in the minigame Assignment Ada, which depicts Ada retrieving the sample for Wesker. Another minigame, The Mercenaries, features Ada as one of five playable characters. When Capcom ported the game to the PlayStation 2, a third minigame titled Separate Ways was added. This depicts Ada's actions during the main storyline, featuring new plot revelations. Separate Ways is supplemented by the five-part Ada's Report, in which Ada reveals several secrets; including how she supplies Wesker with "a different present" instead of the Plagas sample that she retrieves in the game and that she is actually working for another organization against Wesker's efforts. It is also revealed that Ada was dispatched alongside Jack Krauser by Wesker, but she eventually kills him in Separate Ways.

Cpl. Carlos Oliveira (voiced by Vince Corazza) is a member of the U.B.C.S. Delta Platoon, Company A. He serves as Jill Valentine's partner character in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis as well as in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

History
Carlos in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Carlos in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Originally from a South American anti-government guerrilla group, his exact nationality is unknown, though he does have Native American ancestry. After government forces wiped out his former organization, Carlos was scouted out by the Umbrella Corporation to join their U.B.C.S. special ops unit. He joined up, and was assigned to Delta Platoon, Company A along with the likes of Nicholai Ginovaef and Mikhail Victor.

Carlos was put in charge of handling heavy weapons, along with other duties such as local procurement, rear security and arms maintenance. His expertise in weaponry and vehicle operation made him a valuable asset. Despite his violent background, he is warm-hearted and is known for joking around. Perhaps as a result of being raised amidst violence, he is brave and always willing to throw himself in the middle of danger.

In Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Carlos meets and assists Jill Valentine throughout the game as the two of them attempt to escape Raccoon City together. At one point Jill becomes infected by the T-Virus after a battle with the Nemesis. At this point Carlos becomes playable so that the player can prepare a vaccine for Jill. Ultimately he is successful in escaping the city alive along with Jill, but although his survival is confirmed little is known about Carlos' fate following the destruction of Raccoon City.

Carlos returned as a playable character to reprise his role in the Resident Evil 3 segment of Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. He was again paired up with Jill Valentine as the two attempt to escape from Raccoon City alive.

Sgt. Nicholai Ginovaef (Николай Зино́вьев) is a video game character appearing in the survival horror series Resident Evil, voiced by actor Roger Honeywell. A mercenary in the service of the Umbrella Corporation, he is originally from Moscow, Russia. Nicholai's surname Ginovaef is not a real Russian name, and was mistranslated from the original Zinoviev (ジノビエフ, Zinoviev?).

Stats

* Birthdate: 1962 or 1963
* Height: 187cm
* Weight: 102kg
* Blood Type: O

History

A former member of Spetsnaz prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, Nicholai has been involved in various classified missions and special operations on behalf of the Umbrella Corporation. He not only leads the B-Team of the U.B.C.S. Delta Platoon, but is also secretly a member of Umbrella's internal espionage organization, Monitor, where he is known by the code name "Silver Fox". Nicholai answers directly to Colonel Sergei Vladimir, commander of the U.B.C.S. and leader of Monitor. He also has an unspoken rivalry with HUNK, a prominent member of the Umbrella Special Forces.

Unlike the other U.B.C.S. members, who are mostly third-world mercenaries or convicted war criminals hired as foot-soldiers by Umbrella, Nicholai is a career Umbrella secret agent. Nicholai meets Jill Valentine as one of the few surviving operatives from the Delta Platoon, along with Carlos and Mikhail. Unbeknownst to his U.B.C.S. comrades, Nicholai is one of the "Supervisors", Umbrella agents stationed throughout the city assigned to monitor the T-virus outbreak, as well as to gather combat data on the various monsters as the U.B.C.S. soldiers encounter and fight them. However, Umbrella's monsters proved to be even more effective than the company anticipated, and the U.B.C.S. teams were utterly wiped out, stranding Nicholai and the other Supervisors within the city limits.

An exceptionally ruthless and crafty individual, Nicholai realizes that if all the other Supervisors were to die, he will have a monopoly on the combat data, giving him the ability to bargain for a higher price from Umbrella. Nicholai spends much of his time covertly hunting down the other Supervisors and executing them. Jill Valentine, in her explorations of Raccoon City, often unknowingly encounters his handiwork.

Jill eventually learns Nicholai's true identity and confronts him about it. Nicholai does not gloat about his deception. Rather than bearing his enemies and victims any malice, Nicholai seems to take a detached, business-like attitude towards dispatching them.

Nicholai's ultimate fate in Resident Evil 3 varies depending on which route the player takes. He can be killed by the Nemesis, killed by the player, or escape successfully.

In November 2007, it was revealed that Nicholai would return to play an important role in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, as Ada Wong's contact during her mission to recover the G-Virus sample. They rendezvous at the Apple Inn. This scenario takes place prior to Raccoon City's destruction.

Controversy

Survival

Nicholai's survival at the end of Resident Evil 3 has long been the subject of much debate among fans, thanks to the multiple endings offered the game. Nicholai either gets killed by the Nemesis, gets his chopper blown up by Jill, or manages to escape after Jill unsuccessfully negotiates with him. Only one of these endings actually favors Nicholai's survival in the game.

The US and PAL versions of Resident Evil Survivor feature a document by Nicholai authored after the events of Nemesis, which seems to favor a scenario in which the U.B.C.S. member survives. However, the file is different in the original Japanese version and the Chinese PC port, the latter being the most recent version of the game released. The third entry of the document (the only portion dated after the events of Nemesis) was actually authored by the "Umbrella B.O.W. R&D Team" and not by Nicholai as seen in the English localization.

"Decisions, Decisions"

Nicholai makes a cameo appearance in the Resident Evil Outbreak scenario, "Decisions, Decisions". However, since this scenario supposedly takes place during the final day of Raccoon City, it seems improbable that Nicholai is in the Raccoon City University on the same day he escapes from Raccoon City via helicopter. As such, this scenario, and indeed the Outbreak games in general, are usually considered non-canonical.

The only way to accept the scenario as canon is if the University was near the Park, and that being aware of the destruction caused by experimental Tyrants, Nicholai had to wait for the Thanatos to leave. Greg Mueller would also have to be on Umbrellas "hit list" and Nicholai, who only saw a chance for more money, would have heard of his location. After last being seen in the scenario, Nicholai would then have to leave for the Dead Factory, which would be nearby.

He would then find the helicopter and take off. For this to also be canon, the scenario would actually take place over a period of 1-3 hours, with the Thanatos fights lasting for at least 10 minutes.

HUNK debuted as the player's character in the unlockable minigame "The 4th Survivor" in Resident Evil 2. He is a member of the Umbrella Special Forces team which is attacked and wiped out by the mutated William Birkin. HUNK is the only member of the team to survive Birkin's attack, and successfully procure a sample of the G-Virus. The player's objective as HUNK is to escape the sewer, and reach the heliport atop the police precinct. Another minigame, titled "The Tofu Survivor," is essentially identical, replacing HUNK with a giant piece of tofu, is a parody, and a harder version of HUNK's minigame.

HUNK's character is fleshed out in subsequent games through in-game documents acquired by the player, and sourcebooks related to the series. HUNK's operational orders is one of the added "EX Files" in the Nintendo 64 version of the game. A character-specific epilogue in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis states that HUNK has a habit of being the only survivor of his team, earning him the nickname "Mr. Death". A document in Resident Evil Code: Veronica reveals that he received his military training on Rockfort Island. He made frequent stops there, delivering experimental B.O.W.s.

Since then he has been a playable character in Resident Evil 4's non-canon minigame, "The Mercenaries". He is also playable in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, which features a canonical first person remake of "The 4th Survivor".

Alfred Ashford (voiced by Peter Oldring) is the initial antagonist during the first half of the game. He is the manager of the Rockfort Island facility and the seventh generation master of the once prestigious Ashford family. Alfred, along with Alexia are genetically altered twins created by their father from Veronica Ashford's DNA. However, he was not endowed with Veronica's superior intellect like his sister. Due to his twin sister's absence, he developed a split personality disorder and poses as Alexia while she is away. Claire and Steve encounter Alfred in both of his personalities during their escape from Rockfort Island, eventually chasing them into the Antarctic Facility before dying from a bullet wound from Steve and then falling from a great height. At this point, the player can pick up Alfred's sniper rifle and use it in the following battle against Nosferatu. Alfred lives just long enough to see his sister Alexia awaken from her cold storage induced sleep. When Chris is exploring the Antarctic facility, he comes across Alfred's corpse.
